What are Thick Descriptions?

Thick descriptions are ethnographic texts which seek to describe a situation in detail. They create a sense of being observational and objective while already incorporating a certain degree of interpretation because they are written from the author’s perspective and have a certain focus. Clifford Geertz describes it as follows: “what we call our data are really our own constructions of other people’s constructions of what they and their compatriots are up to” (Geertz 1993, p.11).

To gain such thick descriptions, Participant Observations can be used. To learn more about this method, please click here.
