FitOn

My personal new born love in the era of fitness apps. When activating FitOn you are welcomed with a motivational quote. No avertisement, no demands, no nothing at this point. Just you, this quote a a short moment to embody it. After a second or two you’ll be brought to the main page where your programme appears (not when opening the app for the first time though, you’ll need to go through the questionnaire first). At the top of the page the amount of workouts per week that you have selected will appear. These have been selected to accord your progress and interests. In the workouts themselves you have a calory clock visible as you go along. On the programme page you’ll also find an option to chill out with some light yoga and stretching. Further down, you can access a daily blog entry about topics that deal with fitness.

In the browse section you can search the library using different methods. You can search by different categories such as stretching or circuits, by challenges, certain target areas or requirements towards the workout such as time and intensity. You can even make an inquiry by trainers and some featured celebrities. In the advice section you have access to blogs and videos ranging from actual fitness, to nutrition and health.

Another highlight of the app is for you customised meal plans. You will go through another questionnaire when you enter the meal plan section. Things of importance are your eating habits, your likes and dislikes and intolerances. You’ll get a whole new meal plan day by day. A note here: the actual recipes are only accessible when you have the Premium version of the app. But hey, the meal plans can serve as inspiration and orientation and offer us to get creative.

You can also connect with friends. What I really like about the app apart from the highlights is that it is non-competitive and self-reflective.

Are you and I maybe sharing the same FitOn love?

Adidas Training (by Runtastic)

Opening the Adidas Training by Runtastic app, you are welcomed with your daily recommended workout. Recommended does not mean it is mandatory. Scrolling down a bit you will see guided workouts that coaches have recorded for you, challenges that engage to work together and reach our goals, a workout customiser which lets you focus on one or two areas or select all and do a whole body workout, the latest workouts with the most views and short workouts when time is what is holding you back from getting into the squad.

In the progress section you have the opportunity to keep track of your achievements by uploading photos. These are for you and only you. The app keeps them private. The pictures serve to motivate you if weight loss or toning is your fitness goal and show how you progress along the way. You can also go ahead and ignore the opportunity since this might not be your goal and the feature thus irrelevant. On the same page you find articles around nutrition. Some of them are accessible for free. The newsfeed also provides you with information and blog entries around fitness in general. In the plan section you have access to some free workout plans that range from 3 to 6 weeks. Overall, by using the app you collect points and followingly level up (in a virtual and physical sense).

myfitnesspal (by Under Armour)

myfitnesspal is an virtual log book for you to keep track of your fitness. On the front page you’ll find a summary of your latest progress. In other menu options you’ll find the categories to enter your nutrition and your training. In the nutrition log book section you will find multiple ways of how to note down the food you consume. Soooo, you will not need to type in every single gram in the log book. As your journal grows you’ll be able to refer back to some of your regular recipes or meals. You can set these in advance as well. When adding food to the log book you can scan the bar codes of the packages (unless you live package free :D). Going to a restaurant? Locate it with the app and select the dish you ate. No strings (hypothesing all the ingredients included) attached.

When adding your workout you’ll just have to answer three questions: How long and how many calories burnt (and the time of day). This information is mostly provided by many workout providers. The app then calculates your fitness statistics. You have two co-working statistics going on at the same time: your fitness level in a line chart and your nutrition in a pie chart (what a coincidence: a pie chart and my cravings for a pie now 🙁 ).

Johnson a. Johnson Official 7 Minute Workout

Johnson and Johnson is an app that is based on scientific findings to make the best out of a short workout. The app offers a range of different 7 minute workouts on different fitness levels. Another great option that the app gives you is is the “Smart Workout” which adapts to your fitness progress. On the home screen you can access the workout library directly as well.

The word ‘Burpees’ comes up in a workout plan or a conversation with friends. You can’t keep up? The Johnson and Johnson Offical 7 minute workout app offers visual explanations of the different exercises. You can also scroll through the exercise library. With the inspiration of the exercises presented there, you can easily create your own workout. After having watched the short demonstration videos once or twice, you’ll be well prepared to do the individual exercises. Take out paper and pen and write down the names and maybe a few hints regarding the exercise. What also works quite well is to draw little stick man figures.  You will find these options in the right hand corner of the app when you tap on the red “dotted” circle. There you will also come across your performance statistics.

Time for you to get the Johnson and Johnson Official 7 Minute Workout app?

7 Minute Workout

How the name of the app already indicates, the workouts do not exceed the time limit of seven minutes. 7 Minute Workout has a vast variety of workouts that range from chill stretching to HIIT workouts. Your favourite “7 minutes“ can be saved in the allocated section.  These workouts are convenient when time to workout is limited.

Ever had the idea to create your own workout. 7 Minute Workout guides you through customising your own workout. In your customised workout you will get the opportunity to choose between different exercises for all body regions combining them to a full body workout. After having chosen your exercises you can individually decide on how many sets you want to and how much time you give yourself to rest. In the pre-save overview the overall time and the estimated burnt calories are summarised. It’ll then be saved in your library.

In a further section, you can review your workout calendar, seeing what you been doing on a daily basis and and overview of your weight if this is relevant to you.

Are you going to take (less than) 7 minutes to download the 7 Minute Workout app ?

Adidas by Runtastic

Adidas by Runtastic tracks your run immediately giving you the most important information on demand on the screen. Distance, time and burned calories are displayed instantly. More than that, the app offers you to partake in the Adidas Running  community where you can post about your achievements and follow others on their journey. You can also connect with friends . On another note, the app offer you different communal challenges and informs you about your running statistics. One thing that the app has taught me personally is that I should say my final goodbyes to my beloved running shoes. The end of a such eventful love. After 500km having used running shoes the support the shoe is supposed to give you is not sufficient anymore. The app helps you track how much your shoes has on its back (or rather its sole). Time for a new journey, time for new shoes.
