Bremen Days of Ethnographic Film

24th to 26th of January in Bremen

The Ethnographic Film Festival of the Department of Anthropology and Cultural Research at the University of Bremen is starting again for the eleventh time in January 2023. From 24.01. to 26.01. we are inviting you to enjoy the evenings together with exciting, cultural films from all over the world. After each film you will have the opportunity to ask the filmmakers questions and join a discuss. This year the Ethnographic Film Festival is hybrid: Join us at the University or on Zoom.

The films were chosen in a seminar by staff and students from the Department. We put a diverse program together that includes national and international productions, various themes, and innovative approaches.

On Tuesday, 24th of January, we are going to start at the University of Bremen with six student films shot by filmmakers from different universities. While watching these films about topics like life on the water, escape from Ukraine, sexuality and identity and many more, we can gain an interesting and critical insight into our society.

The event on Wednesday evening is also taking place at the University of Bremen and we split the night into two sections. First, we get to enjoy experimental films which examine the topics homeland, lockdown and colonialism in a creative and original way. The second part of the evening is dedicated to museums and archives and offers us insight into German nationalism and colonialism.

And finally, we will spend the last evening (26th of January) at City46. There we’ll enjoy two cinematic films about immigrant workers and the life of migrants on the big screen.

We look forward to seeing you at the Ethnographic Film Festival!
