Library
Welcome to the state and university library (in German “Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek”)! The library building is located in the centre of the campus, in the middle of the boulevard. You will find books and magazines for nearly every faculty. The building also has several rooms to study or do research.
The building has 5 floors in total. Before you get to use the library, you need to go to the right, where you need to hand in all your bags and jackets. You can of course keep everything you need to work. If you just want to give back a book you borrowed, you can keep all you stuff. It is also important to have your library card at hand, as you’ll need it to borrow books or use the computers.
On the ground floor you will find all important services the library offers. There are the counters for the book lending and returning, as well as shelves where you will find the books you ordered from the stockroom. Not all books are stored in the area where students have access to. If you need one of those books, you can order it on the library webpage and the staff will place it in those shelves. The ground floor of the library also offers many computers, which are free to use for all students. Behind the computers is a room to print, copy or scan all the documents you need. To pay the printing, you can use your mensa card or coins.
You can either use the lift or the stairs to get to the higher floors. On each floor you will find places to work.
BUT: during the corona pandemic, you need to book a place to work, before actually using it.
If you can’t make it to uni, but need to get access to the online library without being locked into the university WIFI, you can use a VPN connection. This enables you to download all of the 200.000 ebooks offered by the online library from home. If you want to learn more about VPN connection, look here.
On the different floors of the library you can find books for different faculties. It’s a good idea to first look for books on the library website. When you found the right book, the website will tell you exactly where to look for it. When you found the book, it’s always good to take a look at the book surrounding it, as you’ll sometimes find other interesting books about your topic.
When is the library opened?
Its opened from Monday to Saturday. The exact opening times of the library can be found here.
Where, and for how long can I borrow the books?
To borrow the books you need to take them to the ground floor, where you will find both, a self service counter or a counter with a member of staff helping you. You will need your library card and the barcode, which can be found on every book, that needs to be scanned. Normally you can borrow each book for four weeks, and you can extend the deadline up to five times, as long as no one else wants to have the book.
How do I get a book from the stockroom?
When you find a book on the library page which is stored in the stockroom, you can order it with just one click by entering you library card number. After some time, you will find them in the stockrooms shelve, located on the ground floor of the library. All the books are sorted by the students names. But don’t forget that you still need to scan the barcode before taking the books home.
I forgot about the lending period, what now?
When the lending period ends, you’ll receive an email from the library. If you’re lucky you can just extend the lending on the library website by logging into your account. If someone else already booked the book, you need to return the book as soon as possible. You also need to pay a dunning charge, which gets higher the longer you keep the book.
The library doesn’t offer the book I need. Can I borrow it via inter-library loan?
Yes, of course! To do that, you need to create an inter-library loan account. For every inter-library loan you need to pay a little loan fee. All available sources can be found here.
How does the media centre work?
Apart from books and magazines, the library offers several audio- or video materials. At the media centre you can listen to or watch these in individual cabins. You can also lend them for a maximum of two weeks. The media centre has different opening times and usually closes at 1 pm.
Is it possible to book a fixed place to work or a book drawer ?
Yes, it is possible. You can find everything about the study places in the library on their website or you can go and ask one of the staff members. Because of the corona pandemic there are specific restrictions. All the work places need to be booked in advanced, which is only possible on the same day (First come- first serve!). More information about the restrictions in the library can be found here.
I need to scan or print something, where can I do that?
Did you know, that…
The university of Bremen has its own streaming service? You can log onto Kanopy with the login details of your webmail account and watch lots of documentaries and movies. The website is worth a look, trust us!
