University in society: As a scientific institution in society, the University of Bremen assumes responsibility for structuring structures and institutional behaviors according to the criterion of social diversity.

2. Diversity in and through research and teaching: Diversity is a structural principle of the university. As a factor of innovation and creativity, it comes into play in the diversity of specialist and knowledge cultures, their methods, forms of teaching and learning and in the content of research and teaching.

3. Inclusive claim: The diversity approach addresses all members of the university and all university areas (teaching, research, administration). It encompasses both ‚diversity mainstreaming‘ and the promotion of specific target groups.

4. Competence in Dealing with Diversity: The University of Bremen regards the knowledge of and the competent handling of diversity as an important educational goal in the context of a global knowledge society.

5. Diversity as a factor and framework for the success of studies and qualifications: The University of Bremen declares the success of the study as a joint task of the students and the educational institution. In doing so, she sees herself as responsible for creating diversity-appropriate framework conditions and promoting individual academic success under these conditions.

6. Empowerment and Participation: Different individual prerequisites and personal development opportunities of the university members are optimally supported with the goal of comprehensive participation and dedicated participation in university life.

7. Anti-discrimination: The members of the University of Bremen are called to act against degradation and disadvantage. Discrimination in all its dimensions is actively counteracted.

The current Diversity Strategy of the University of Bremen from the year 2017 can be found here.

The gender equality concept of the University of Bremen can be found here.

The current women support plan of the University of Bremen can be found here.

Information about the audit Family-friendly university can be found here.

Research results on Gender and Diversity: Results of the CHE Survey on Diversity (2012) can be found here.

Klicke hier, um mehr zu erfahren

Gender in research

Date: winter semester 2018/19

Duration: about 3 hours

Location: NW2, A1297 (seminar room of biology didactics)

Target group: PhD students, postdocs and working group leaders

Preliminary program:

Distinction of sex and gender
Gender aspects in research
Presentation of the toolkit „Gender in EU funded Research“
Practical exercise: Identification of gender aspects in own research projects

Gender and Equality – Part 1

Date: In planning

Duration: 4-5 hours

Location: NW2, A1297 (seminar room of biology didactics)

Target group: PhD students, postdocs and researchers, students (focus groups)

Preliminary program:

Insight, classification, gender concept
Raising awareness of gender and profession in the life sciences
Posture, rhetoric and language
Science (content) and role (sender): how gender can shape and influence the content; how communication and gender are related.
Practical Exercise: BioSciences Impulsive Event and Gender Meaning; how and why he * and she * are read and understood.

Gender and Diversity – Part 2

Date: In planning

Duration: 4-5 hours

Location: NW2, A1297 (seminar room of biology didactics)

GENDER – a definition of terms Gender is defined in scientific language as a term for the social gender and in contrast to sex as a biological sex.
