Ever wondered how scientists figure out what tiny microbes are eating in the ocean? That’s where FLA-PS (Fluorescent Labelled Polysaccharides) come in. These are basically “glowing snacks” for microbes. Scientists attach a fluorescent tag to natural sugars, so when microbes consume them, they light up under a microscope.

This makes it much easier to see who’s eating what and how for example organic matter is broken down in aquatic ecosystems. It’s like turning invisible processes into something we can actually watch in real time. So, with FLA-PS, ecologists can better understand carbon cycling and the roles microbes play in ecosystems.
