The trailer for the third film of the Fantastic Beasts series has been highly anticipated. But the reason for that may not be the excitement of having another glimpse at the Potterverse. Rather, people want to see what Gellert Grindelwald now looks like. After the scandalous downfall of Johnny Depp, the role was recast and now Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen portrays the Dark wizard, who tries to take over both the magical and the muggle worlds. The trailer, however, disappoints in this particular point. Mikkelsen does appear, but only in a few brief shots. The seemingly most anticipated part of the film is thus reduced to a few seconds.
The remainder of the trailer delivers. Naturally, Dumbledore’s secrets are not spoiled here, but we see a lot of action: magic and its repercussions, beasts, Quidditch and a visit to Hogwarts. Fans of the Potterverse will recognise familiar faces from the first two instalments of the series and rejoice at the fact that Jude Law’s now greying Dumbledore hasn’t lost his dry sense of humour.
It remains to be seen how much the following trailers will reveal. My curiosity was certainly sparked and I hope to see more until the premiere in April 2022.
