{"id":825,"date":"2016-07-26T00:46:09","date_gmt":"2016-07-25T14:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/?p=825"},"modified":"2016-07-29T21:36:35","modified_gmt":"2016-07-29T19:36:35","slug":"peers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/peers\/","title":{"rendered":"Peers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Peers is a term which both L2 and L3 use in their interview to express that they do not see themselves as superiour to their students (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"&quot;I consider the students to to be my peers\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/interview-with-l2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interview with L2<\/a><\/span> &amp; <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"&quot;treating your students or treating your peers as part of your family, part of your mob.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/03\/06\/interview-with-l3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interview with L3<\/a><\/span>). It is closely linked to the idea of a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/relationship\/\">relationship<\/a> between teachers and students which is discussed as a separate category.<\/p>\n<p>As L2 sees herself as &#8220;part of the group&#8221; (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cI guess being part of the group rather than in front of the group.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/interview-with-l2\/\">Interview with L2<\/a><\/span>), she prefers to sit with the students rather than in front of the class (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"&quot;I think that\u00b4s why I sort of sat in the class cause ehm ehm I consider the students to to be my peers\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/interview-with-l2\/\">Interview with L2<\/a><\/span>). In her opinion, it would be even better, if the classroom would provide the possibility to sit in a circle because &#8220;\u201cif you\u2019re in a circle there\u2019s no leader [\u2026] And everybody is equal [\u2026] including the teacher&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/interview-with-l2\/\">Interview with L2<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this physical representation of equality, both L2 and L3 also put themselves on one level with the students through certain comments they make. Both tutors frequently admit that their knowledge is not all encompassing (e.g.\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cIn the end she admits that she does not have enough knowledge to say what really happened in the past\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2015\/11\/19\/class-1-tutorial-27082015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Tutorial 27\/08\/2015<\/a><\/span> &amp; <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cI only picked up this subject this year so, you know, again, the wealth of my readings were () were a little bit briefer than some of the other courses I\u00b4ve had a little bit more experience in and ehm know the literature a little bit better.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/03\/06\/interview-with-l3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interview with L3<\/a><\/span>) and that they, as well, make mistakes (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201c\u2018I also make mistakes\u2019, she says&quot;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2015\/11\/19\/class-1-tutorial-23112015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Tutorial 29\/10\/2015<\/a><\/span> &amp; <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"&quot;he notices a number of typing errors on the slides and points them out to us&quot;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2015\/11\/19\/class-2-lecture-27082015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 2: Lecture 27\/08\/2015<\/a><\/span>). Therefore, not only the students are learning from the tutors but also vice versa. They <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/sharing-knowledge\/\" target=\"_blank\">share knowledge<\/a>. In addition, L2 tells the class that she has been very nervous the first time she was holding a lecture in order to calm down a nervous student (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cL2 talks about the first lecture she was holding in which she was also very nervous.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2015\/11\/19\/class-1-tutorial-03092015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Tutorial 03\/09\/2015<\/a><\/span>).
