{"id":817,"date":"2016-07-26T00:42:46","date_gmt":"2016-07-25T14:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/?p=817"},"modified":"2016-08-12T11:38:18","modified_gmt":"2016-08-12T09:38:18","slug":"storytelling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/storytelling\/","title":{"rendered":"Storytelling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Storytelling is an important part of both classes. &#8220;[Q]uite often I\u2019m able to () tell a story about each topic [\u2026] that we discuss in class.&#8221;, L2 says (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/interview-with-l2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interview with L2<\/a>) and S1 agrees: &#8220;L2 tells stories&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/03\/06\/interview-with-l3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interview with S1<\/a>). L3 is &#8220;also a big fan of narrative so [he] love[s] the idea of talking. Love[s] the idea of storytelling. Love[s] the idea of sharing. Lived experiences.&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/03\/06\/interview-with-l3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interview with L3<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>As he mentions, the lecturer&#8217;s or tutor&#8217;s lived experience with a topic is one kind of story told during both classes (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cShe was able to witness such a situation herself when participating in a NAIDOC week event at her daughter\u2019s school.\u201d \"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/class-1-lecture-01092015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Lecture 01\/09\/2015<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cShe also tells us more about her own teaching experience.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2015\/11\/19\/class-1-tutorial-03092015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Tutorial 03\/09\/2015<\/a><\/span> &amp; <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cI try to share lived experiences if possible.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/03\/06\/interview-with-l3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interview with L3<\/a><\/span>). Furthermore, stories can function as real-life examples of the issues discussed (e.g. <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cL1 tells the students about a particular problem her son has solved in kindergarten using his tracking skills.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/class-1-lecture-01092015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Lecture 01\/09\/2015<\/a><\/span>, <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cShe then tells the story of her ex-partner who had to walk several kilometres to school on a dirt road every day.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2015\/11\/19\/class-1-tutorial-03092015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Tutorial 03\/09\/2015<\/a><\/span> &amp; <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"&quot;L3 uses the example of an expert meeting in Geneva he attended.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2015\/11\/19\/class-2-lecture-29112015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 2: Lecture 29\/10\/2015<\/a><\/span>), show diverse opinions (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cShe then talks about her own experience while working for the Department of School Education and gives examples of opinions of some of the teachers she met in this frame.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/class-1-lecture-01092015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Lecture 01\/09\/2015<\/a><\/span>), serve as proof (e.g. <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cShe also had a problem finding a school to do her practical experience in Aboriginal Studies in because many schools do not teach it.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2015\/11\/19\/class-1-tutorial-03092015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Tutorial 03\/09\/2015<\/a><\/span>) and underline a topic&#8217;s significance (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cShe also uses the situation of her grand-parents as an example for the significance of this specific project.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/class-1-lecture-06102015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Lecture 06\/10\/2015<\/a><\/span>). Their overall aim, according to L2 and L3, is to provide a context for the abstract academic content which will help the audience to connect with it (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cI\u00b4m able to remember the stories of my elders to what academics have researched and written.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/interview-with-l2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interview with L2<\/a><\/span> &amp; <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cBut again at the same time I do try to tell me stories to kind of connect to the abstract concepts with my audience as well.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/03\/06\/interview-with-l3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interview with L3<\/a><\/span>). To do so, stories are either told at the end of the topic discussion as examples as explained above or at the beginning as openers introducing the topic (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"&quot;she tells the class that a few years ago she was asked to work with an organisation on its RAP and uses this as a starting point to explain what a RAP can look like and what has to be done to put one together.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2015\/11\/19\/class-1-tutorial-23112015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Tutorial 29\/10\/2015<\/a><\/span> &amp; <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cHe has also attended a different meeting on UN level which he repeatedly calls \u201cvery interesting\u201d. He explains the seating order of the different countries\u00b4 governments and indigenous representatives to show their different attitudes.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2015\/11\/19\/class-2-lecture-03092015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 2: Lecture 03\/09\/2015<\/a><\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>If tutors or lecturers are telling personal stories, in S1&#8217;s opinion, this also means that they bring their personal lives into the classroom (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cI think our teacher just talks about herself personally whereas most teachers () don\u00b4t bring in like () () their personal lives.&quot;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/03\/15\/interview-with-s1\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interview with S1<\/a><\/span>) which &#8220;allows [the students] to challenge them&#8221; (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cSo I think having a teacher that purposefully asks questions to challenge you or tell stories about themselves and that allows you to challenge them \u2013 that\u00b4s a good method of teaching.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/03\/15\/interview-with-s1\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interview with S1<\/a><\/span>). The teachers, however, are not the only ones to tell stories.
