In the majority of cases, the audiovisual material used consists of short documentaries, video reports or other informational films. Occasionally, however, it also includes songs, comics, diagrams, drawings, photos and episodes of a TV series.<\/p>\n<p>The functions the audiovisual material has are diverse. With the help of documentaries and video reports, additional information on people (e.g.<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cL1 shows a Youtube video about William Cooper\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/class-1-lecture-01092015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Lecture 01\/09\/2015<\/a><\/span>) and events (e.g.<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cShe then shows a video about the repatriation of Yagan\u00b4s remains&quot;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/class-1-lecture-13102015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Lecture 13\/10\/2015<\/a><\/span> &amp; <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cAfter the break we watch a documentary about Myall Creek.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2015\/11\/19\/class-1-tutorial-27082015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Tutorial 27\/08\/2015<\/a><\/span>) as well as explanations of topics and issues (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cShe then shows a Youtube video explaining why it is important that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is included in the school curriculum&quot;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/class-1-lecture-01092015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Lecture 01\/09\/2015<\/a><\/span>) are presented. By watching an Indigenous TV series, the students are to gain a general &#8220;idea of Aboriginal youth today&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/interview-with-l2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interview with L2<\/a>). On the other hand, other short video formats (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cThen she shows two videos presenting different opinions on a particular housing project.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/class-1-lecture-06102015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Lecture 06\/10\/2015<\/a><\/span>) as well as songs (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"&quot;Afterwards, she plays a &lt;span title=&quot;&quot;&gt;song&lt;\/span&gt; by an Aboriginal singer talking about Christian rules to underline that one should not generalise&quot;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/class-1-lecture-25082015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Lecture 25\/08\/2015<\/a><\/span>) and comics (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cAfterwards he briefly shows a satirical comic&quot;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2015\/11\/19\/class-2-lecture-27082015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 2: Lecture 27\/08\/2015<\/a><\/span>) display opinions and views.<\/p>\n<p>As the &#8220;majority of Aboriginal people are visual learners&#8221;, as L2 states (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/interview-with-l2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interview with L2<\/a>), the classes specifically support this way of learning through the use of the above mentioned media as well as through the occasional integration of diagrams (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"&quot;before presenting a model of Aboriginal learning.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/class-1-lecture-01092015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Lecture 01\/09\/2015<\/a><\/span>) and pictures (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"&quot;but first talks about the picture which is included on the slide.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/class-1-lecture-27102015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 1: Lecture 27\/10\/2015<\/a><\/span>). Likewise, L3 highlights and praises the way in which visual learning is integrated into one of the student presentation (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"\u201cL3 praises one of the students for creating slides which were visually strong. That was very good for visual learners, he says.\u201d\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2015\/11\/19\/class-2-tutorial-03092015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Class 2: Tutorial 03\/09\/2015<\/a><\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>Being the preferred way of learning of Aboriginal people, the audiovisual material has a direct <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/connection-to-identity-and-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\">connection to culture<\/a>. Furthermore, S2 perceives it as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/effectiveness\/\" target=\"_blank\">easier to take on, easier to comprehend <\/a>[and] more real life than just stuff out of a book.
