{"id":255,"date":"2016-02-28T12:30:42","date_gmt":"2016-02-28T01:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/?p=255"},"modified":"2016-08-14T01:28:28","modified_gmt":"2016-08-13T23:28:28","slug":"class-1-lecture-13102015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/class-1-lecture-13102015\/","title":{"rendered":"Class 1: Lecture (13\/10\/2015)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This description is derived from notes taken during class, the university&#8217;s recording of the lecture and my memories of the session.<\/p>\n<p><em>L1 begins this week&#8217;s class on leadership and activism by\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Encouragement of further learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/encouragement-of-further-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">pointing out<\/a><\/span> that ABC will be screening a\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Audiovisual learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/audiovisual-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">documentary<\/a><\/span> on Aboriginal activist John Maynard in November. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>After giving some general information about the discourse on Aboriginal activism, she describes the way in which a<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"People and their background\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/people-and-their-background\/\" target=\"_blank\">particular governor<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>treated Aboriginal people and how an Aboriginal woman named\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"People and their background\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/people-and-their-background\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barrangaroo<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>reacted to this behaviour. In order to tell the story of Barrangaroo, L1 refers to a<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"People and their Background\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/people-and-their-background\/\" target=\"_blank\">particular marine<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>about whom she also gives some information<\/strong><\/span>. {Click <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/analysis\/connection-between-the-content-and-the-students-world\/relating-the-information-to-aspects-in-the-real-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for analysis} After talking about an argument Barrangaroo had with her husband, L1 compares their relationship to <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Lecturer\u00b4s relation to the topic\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/lecturerstutors-relation-to-the-topic\/\" target=\"_blank\">her own<\/a><\/span>. She also notes that a <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Connection to students\u00b4 world\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/connection-to-students-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">site near Sydney harbour will soon be called Barrangaroo<\/a><\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>L1 then gives some more general information about Aboriginal activism, before turning to the story of<\/strong><\/span> <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"People and their background\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/people-and-their-background\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yagan<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>an Aboriginal man from the colonial past. As Barrangaroo as well as Yagan were already part of earlier lectures, L1 refers back to those sessions, reminding the students of the aspects which were already discussed. She then shows a<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Audiovisual learning\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/audiovisual-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>about the repatriation of Yagan&#8217;s remains which also introduces the discourse of Yagan as a hero. For a long time, L1 says, it was impossible to see him as a martyr because there officially never was an invasion. She then reads out a\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Art\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/art\/\" target=\"_blank\">poem<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>which connects Yagan to a<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Connection to students\u00b4 world\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/connection-to-students-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">recent topic<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>in order to depict the attempt to bring colonial freedom fighter&#8217;s into contemporary life.<\/strong><\/span> <\/em><em>{Click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/analysis\/connection-between-the-content-and-the-students-world\/relating-the-information-to-aspects-in-the-real-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for analysis}<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>She also <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"William Cooper has been formerly discussed on 01\/09\/2015\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/class-1-lecture-01092015\/\" target=\"_blank\">again mentions William Cooper<\/a><\/span> and his activism against Kristallnacht, showing a different\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Audiovisual learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/audiovisual-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a><\/span> this time, before moving on to another campaign Cooper was part of. Again, she stresses the <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Connection to students\u00b4 world\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/connection-to-students-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">significance this has today<\/a><\/span>. She then presents a number of other <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"People and their background\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/people-and-their-background\/\" target=\"_blank\">popular Aboriginal people from diverse backgrounds<\/a><\/span> and from the past as well as the present.
