{"id":251,"date":"2016-02-28T12:25:45","date_gmt":"2016-02-28T01:25:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/?p=251"},"modified":"2016-08-14T01:45:47","modified_gmt":"2016-08-13T23:45:47","slug":"class-1-lecture-06102015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/02\/28\/class-1-lecture-06102015\/","title":{"rendered":"Class 1: Lecture (06\/10\/2015)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This description is derived from notes taken during class, the university&#8217;s recording of the lecture and my memories of the session.<\/p>\n<p><em>L1 opens this week&#8217;s lecture by talking about the upcoming assignments for the class. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>As the staff involved in this course felt that an exam does not reflect the type of learning they want to convey, the final assessment will be a\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Reflection\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/reflection\/\" target=\"_blank\">reflective<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>one. Thus,\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Connection to students\u00b4 world\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/connection-to-students-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">personal interests and life experiences<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>can be included in the assignment.<\/strong><\/span> {Click <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/analysis\/connection-between-the-content-and-the-students-world\/reflection-tasks\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for analysis} &#8220;You won&#8217;t often be asked to this in the university&#8221;, L1 says. The creator of this model of assignment is then introduced and presents the marking criteria. When L1 takes over again she stresses that the students <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Accessibility\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/accessibility\/\" target=\"_blank\">can contact the creator at any time<\/a><\/span> with questions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>After searching for the right file for a moment, L1 is ready to start the actual lecture on the topic of Aboriginal housing. While outlining the structure of today&#8217;s lecture, L1 mentions that she will show <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Audiovisual learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/audiovisual-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">more audio-visual footage<\/a><\/span> than she normally does in order to give the students a sense of the diversity of Aboriginal voices. She first gives some information about ideas of housing and the Aboriginal housing situation. Then she shows\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Audiovisual learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/audiovisual-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">two videos<\/a><\/span> presenting <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Opinions\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/opinions\/\" target=\"_blank\">different opinions<\/a><\/span> on a particular housing project. After every video L1 gives some more information underlining the view which was presented. She also uses the <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Storytelling\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/storytelling\/\" target=\"_blank\">situation of her grand-parents<\/a><\/span> as an example for the significance of this specific project.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The next aspect L1 discusses is the government&#8217;s plan to close remote communities. As she is running out of time, she tells the students to watch the\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Audiovisual learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/audiovisual-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">two videos<\/a><\/span> presenting\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Opinions\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/opinions\/\" target=\"_blank\">opinions<\/a><\/span> about this topic\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Encouragement of further learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/encouragement-of-further-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">at home<\/a><\/span> and moves on to putting the issues discussed into context. To do so, she gives a\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Examples\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/case-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\">detailed description of an Aboriginal campaign<\/a><\/span> which led to the first land being given back to Aboriginal people.
