In the beginning, the lecturer (L1) apologises for her weak her voice caused by a cold and expresses her hope that she will nonetheless be able to hold the lecture. In the first part of the lecture, she mostly reads out the notes on the lecture slides, making small changes in sentence structures and <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Additional explanations\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/additional-explanations\/\" target=\"_blank\">adding short explanations<\/a><\/span> and clarifications. After finishing her explanations, she frequently <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Relationship\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/relationship\/\" target=\"_blank\">asks &#8220;ok?&#8221;<\/a><\/span>. In order to explain the term \u2018policy\u2019, L1 does not only give official definitions but also includes people&#8217;s common perception, using phrases like <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Informal vs. academic\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/informal-vs-academic\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;You know, sometimes we believe that&#8230;&#8221;<\/a><\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>L1 then introduces the representation of Aboriginal people in <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Art\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/art\/\" target=\"_blank\">art as a helpful source<\/a><\/span> to understand the impact of policies. She shows several <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Examples\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/case-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\">examples<\/a><\/span>, describes them, points out aspects she sees as <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Opinions\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/opinions\/\" target=\"_blank\">particularly interesting<\/a><\/span>, draws conclusions and asks the students to be critical. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Afterwards L1 switches to the<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Connection to students\u00b4 world\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/connection-to-students-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">present<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>more precisely to names of electorates and routes still existing today. She talks in detail about<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Examples\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/case-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\">an incident of oppression<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>surrounding the mapping-out of Western Australia.<\/strong><\/span> {Click <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/analysis\/connection-between-the-content-and-the-students-world\/relating-the-information-to-aspects-in-the-real-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> for analysis}This is a good example to see how a hero discourse can stand against legal evidence of discrimination, she says. It also shows that many claims to change names often have a very profound reason behind them. L1 also adds an <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Connection to students\u00b4 world\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/connection-to-students-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">example from the local area<\/a><\/span> of the university. She then asks if the students have ever watched the <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Audiovisual learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/audiovisual-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">film The Tracker<\/a><\/span>, using it as a starting point to talk about\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Audiovisual learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/audiovisual-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">images<\/a><\/span> of Aboriginal people in chains.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To show how colonial and Aboriginal histories are intertwined, L1 talks about marriage rules in the past, showing the hierarchy the British brought with them. She reads out a <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Original source\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/direct-voices\/\" target=\"_blank\">politician&#8217;s speech<\/a><\/span> on a play, which was based on a real relationship between a British man and an Aboriginal woman, to address the aspect of people with mixed heritage and then gives more <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Examples\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/case-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\">examples<\/a><\/span>. Afterwards, she plays a <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Audiovisual learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/audiovisual-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">song<\/a><\/span> by an Aboriginal singer talking about Christian rules to underline that one should not generalise. She then presents the <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Opinions\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/opinions\/\" target=\"_blank\">view of<\/a><\/span> three people from public life on Aboriginal policies by <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Original source\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/direct-voices\/\" target=\"_blank\">quoting them directly<\/a><\/span>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To conclude the lecture, L1 gives an overview of steps to be taken to achieve a more just policy making, again <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Original source\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/direct-voices\/\" target=\"_blank\">quoting a number of people<\/a><\/span> and playing another <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Audiovisual learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/audiovisual-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">song<\/a><\/span>. In the end, she gives the students guidelines for researching a policy, stressing the importance of always going back to the\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"original source\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/direct-voices\/\" target=\"_blank\">original source<\/a><\/span> by comparing interpretation to a game of Chinese whispers.
