After a short introduction outlining the history of reconciliation, L1 asks the question: What is reconciliation? She does not answer it right away, however, but first talks about the <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Audiovisual Learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/audiovisual-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">picture<\/a><\/span> which is included on the slide. It is an artwork done by school children, she explains, and <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Opinions\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/opinions\/\" target=\"_blank\">what she loves about it <\/a><\/span>is that the people on it have really weird feet and no noses. She <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Fun\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/fun\/\" target=\"_blank\">laughs<\/a><\/span> about this before returning to the question.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To explain the history of the term \u2018reconciliation\u2019, L1 first tells the students what can be found online if one is looking for images about reconciliation the way she has in preparation for this session. The fact that the first images which come up had to do with Christianity made her think about how many Human Rights related topics come from a background of faith. After talking about the role of Christian churches in the recent past as opposed to the colonial past, she addresses the issue of the separation of church and state. For this, she refers to the <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"People and their background\">judges on the panel of the Mabo case <\/span> and presents two of them in detail. When someone asks a <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Accessibility\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/accessibility\/\" target=\"_blank\">question<\/a><\/span>, L1 repeats it for those listening to the recording before answering it. The student <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Accessibility\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/accessibility\/\" target=\"_blank\">asks again<\/a><\/span> and L1 answers, adding her <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Opinions\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/opinions\/\" target=\"_blank\">own assumptions<\/a><\/span> where she is not sure. <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Sharing Knowledge\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/sharing-knowledge\/\" target=\"_blank\">A different student then adds an idea to this on which L1 comments.<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Turning back to the slides, L1 lists the\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"People and their background\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/people-and-their-background\/\" target=\"_blank\">members of the first Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation<\/a><\/span> and briefly outlines their background and contribution. She then reads out the\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Original source\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/direct-voices\/\" target=\"_blank\">preamble of the Act of Legislation<\/a><\/span> for reconciliation before giving <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Additional explanations\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/additional-explanations\/\" target=\"_blank\">additional information<\/a><\/span>. She proceeds with the next slides in the same way. While talking about Reconciliation Australia, L1 opens their website which she describes as <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Encouragement of further learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/encouragement-of-further-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;really worth having a look at&#8221;<\/a><\/span>. She opens the tab about the RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) when she reaches this topic and reads out the <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Original source\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/direct-voices\/\" target=\"_blank\">definition of the project<\/a><\/span>, which can be found on the page. She then explains it <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Additional explanations\">in more detail<\/span> and gives\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Examples\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/case-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\">examples<\/a><\/span> of actions taken in the frame of the RAP.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>L1 now shows a\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Audiovisual learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/audiovisual-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a><\/span> about the extent of reconciliation and gives some more information about the work Reconciliation Australia has done connected to the curriculum. Something else which is <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Opinions\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/opinions\/\" target=\"_blank\">worth noticing<\/a><\/span>, she says, is that Reconciliation Australia was really good at using social media in order to reach people. That made it more public and accountable.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>L1 now turns to the <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Connection to students\u00b4 worlds\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/connection-to-students-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">RAP of the university<\/a><\/span> in order to explain the process and structure of RAPs. She opens the document, <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Original source\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/direct-voices\/\" target=\"_blank\">reads out some lines<\/a><\/span>, scrolls through the pages and gives extra information. She then explains how the knowledge about reconciliation and RAPs <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Outside knowledge\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/outside-knowledge\/\" target=\"_blank\">can help the students<\/a><\/span> when they are applying for a job. They could find out whether the company they want to work with has an RAP and then address this topic in a job interview. As an\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Examples\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/case-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\">example<\/a><\/span> for other institutions&#8217; RAPs, L1 shows a\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Audiovisual learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/audiovisual-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a><\/span> made by a company to present their RAP.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Afterwards, L1 presents Close the Gap as another campaign. She <span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Encouragement of further learning\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/encouragement-of-further-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">points out<\/a><\/span> a video by Oxfam about this topic for which the link can be found on the slide. L1&#8217;s\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Additional explanations\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/additional-explanations\/\" target=\"_blank\">further explanations<\/a><\/span> on Close the Gap also include the\u00a0<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Opinions\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/07\/26\/opinions\/\" target=\"_blank\">criticism<\/a><\/span> which is often expressed by Aboriginal people.
