It\u2019s really \u2013 I think it\u2019s important. [\u2026] If you can place it back into your own world, it&#8217;s [\u2026] an easier thing to engage with and to connect on&#8221; <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/2016\/03\/06\/interview-with-l3\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interview with L3<\/a>)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For him, establishing a <strong><strong>connection between the content of a class and the students&#8217; world is the key<\/strong><\/strong> to making a class relevant. At the same time, his statement also specifies that this connection is something which has to be <strong><strong>actively established<\/strong><\/strong> by the teacher who has to draw on the students&#8217; world. When the teacher is aware of the students&#8217; reality, s\/he can <strong><strong>focus<\/strong><\/strong> &#8220;educational experiences to aspects of the [\u2026] students&#8217; local environment and lifestyle&#8221; as well as &#8220;into a worldview that [they] can connect with and that has importance in their lives&#8221;, as Donovan describes in his article about quality teaching (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Donovan, M 2009, &quot;Quality Teaching and Aboriginal students, a NSW model&quot;, In: Journal of Australian Indigenous Issues, Vol. 12, No.1-4, pp. 104-115. Print.\">2009: 107<\/span>). The effect of this focus on the students&#8217; world is also witnessed first-hand by Yunkaporta and McGinty as the students in their project are most cooperative when the content has community relevance (<span class=\"tooltips \" style=\"\" title=\"Yunkaporta, T and McGinty, S 2009, &quot;Reclaiming Aboriginal Knowledge at the Cultural Interface&quot;, In: The Australian Educational Researcher, Vol. 36, No. 2, pp. 55-72.\">Yunkaporta et al. 2009: 67<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>In the two classes, there are several ways through which the content is focused on and connected to the students&#8217; world:<\/p>\n<p>a) <u><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/analysis\/connection-between-the-content-and-the-students-world\/relating-the-information-to-aspects-in-the-real-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">through relating the abstract information to aspects in real life<\/a><br \/>\n<\/u>The lecturers and tutors use methods of <strong>localisation<\/strong>, relation to the <strong>present<\/strong>, <strong>visualisation<\/strong> and <strong>personification<\/strong> to connect abstract knowledge to the real life. (Click <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/analysis\/connection-between-the-content-and-the-students-world\/relating-the-information-to-aspects-in-the-real-world\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> to read more.)<\/p>\n<p>b) <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.uni-bremen.de\/aboriginalstudiesclasses\/analysis\/connection-between-the-content-and-the-students-world\/inclusion-of-the-students-background-and-knowledge-through-active-engagement\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>through inclusion of the students&#8217; background and knowledge through active engagement<\/u><\/a><br \/>\nThe students&#8217; diverse backgrounds and experiences are incorporated into the classroom on two levels: on the one hand as a <strong>resource<\/strong> that can be shared and used by everyone and on the other hand as an <strong>underlying condition<\/strong> which influences the focus of the individual students&#8217; learning.
